Public Works - Parks Division

The Division of Parks maintains the city's walking and wood trails, picnic sites, amphitheater, fitness trail, 3 picnic pavilions, barbeque grills, open-air tables, horseshoe pits, and two lakes (one is a state stocked fishing lake). There are 3 softball fields, 4 baseball fields, 2 soccer fields, 2 basketball courts, 4 tennis courts, and a midget football field.

Please note that picnic areas can be reserved by obtaining a permit available at the Recreation Office, and any fishing within the city requires a fishing license.

Trails

  • - Walk and Wood Trails at Piney Point Woods, Mary Elmer Woods, and the Sunset Lake area.
  • - Amphitheater
20-Station Fitness Trail located in the wooded area located between West Park & Scholastic Drives, and Mayor Aitken & West Park Drives.

Picnic Areas

Berkowitz Picnic Grove: Located behind Alden Field with stage, picnic tables and a comfort station. No pavilion.

Piney Point: 3 picnic pavilions, with a single comfort station - electricity is available.

Mary Elmer Woods: 3 pavilions, 2 barbeque grills, open-air tables, 2 horseshoe pits, and a state stocked fishing lake.

Sunset Lake: Picnic tables, barbeque grills, comfort station, and a beach area.

Zoo Pavilion Area: 2 pavilions, a single comfort station- electricity is available.

Veteran's Park: One pavilion, 2 picnic tables. Located on Mayor Aitken Drive across from the Park Office.

Playgrounds

  • - Recreation Hill on Babe Ruth Drive
  • - Boykin Tot Lot on Eagle Street.
  • - Johnson Reeves on East Avenue.
Comfort Stations -For your convenience comfort stations are located at the Rescue Squad, Upper Piney Point, Zoo picnic grove, Sunset Lake and on Mayor Aitken Drive near the Canoe House.

Sports

- Recreation Hill: Located on Recreation Hill there are 3 softball fields, 4 baseball fields, 2 soccer fields, 4 tennis courts, 2 basketball courts and a midget football field. Permits are required for use of the softball, baseball and soccer fields.

- Sportsmen's Corner: A tribute to local coaches, athletes and volunteers in our community. Located on Recreation Hill at Babe Ruth Drive and Burt Street, just past the Hall of Fame.
