June 25th First Ever Health Walk Kicks off at City Park Entrance with Free Giveaway’s and Grand Prizes

One look at the health rankings tells the story of the last several years; Cumberland County is home to the unhealthiest grouping of residents in the state.

That fact hit home with Bridgeton Mayor Albert Kelly as he read the different state and regional health reports that rank Cumberland County at the bottom in terms of health and wellness and it got him thinking about the best way to raise public awareness of the issue and change the health landscape for the better.

Kelly decided on the “Let’s Move Bridgeton 325 ” health campaign, linking it to the “let’s move” nationwide initiative headed by First lady Michelle Obama, which calls on mayors and municipal leaders around the country to come up with programs to help solve the problem of obesity within a generation.

While some details are still being worked out, the “Let’s Move Bridgeton 325” campaign will get rolling with the kick off “Health walk” at 9am on Saturday, June 25th at the City Park entrance. Kelly is calling on residents and businesses throughout the greater Bridgeton area to take part in the Health Walk as a spring-board for what will be an ongoing campaign to improve the health of people in Bridgeton and the surrounding townships with daily and weekly exercise through walking.

Businesses and individuals interested in taking part in the “Let’s Move Bridgeton 325” health campaign can pre-register for the June 25th “Health Walk” on the City’s website, while same-day registrations will start at 8am and go right up to the kick-off at 9am on June 25th.

Working with South Jersey Healthcare, Walgreen’s Pharmacy, Complete Care, Bridgeton Rotary Club, and the Cumberland Health and Wellness Alliance, the “Let’s Move Bridgeton 325” program is calling on all people, including groups of businesses and workers, to take their health more seriously and as a little incentive, walkers will receive a walking kit with a pedometer, walking journal, bottled water, and informational sheets with walking courses and safety tips.

The “Let’s Move Bridgeton 325” campaign is encouraging businesses to sign-up their workers in teams, not just for the June 25th Kick-off event, but over the following weeks and months, noting that many employees walk together on lunch breaks and other times during the day. Relying on the honor system, registered walkers will set their goals and then have the ability to log their miles through links on the City’s website to the websites of SJ Hospital and Walgreens.

Along with the general registration for all walkers, the “Let’s Move Bridgeton 325” program will also hold a “weigh-in” for those walkers who specifically have weight loss as a primary goal, and these walkers can compete for a variety of mystery grand prizes that will be given away to the top weight losers at the end of 2011. The goal, as mayor Kelly noted, is not just to do an event…but to change our lives through good health.
