The City of Bridgeton, in conjunction with New Jersey Urban Enterprise Zone Authority funding, has reinstituted Police Bicycle Patrols throughout the Central Business District, downtown and other areas of Bridgeton’s Urban Enterprise Zone.
This initiative is a priority for Mayor James Begley and City Council as the warm weather months approach. The program was launched in December by Mayor Begley, received approval by City Council in January and final approval from the UEZA in February.
The $15,000 proposal will provide equipment, supplies, and maintenance for two Police Officers to patrol the downtown and adjacent neighborhoods on bicycles from mid April through early October.
In launching this initiative Mayor Begley said “It’s important for residents to know that we will employ a number of different approaches to Police patrols. Whether someone is doing business in our downtown or attending an event or a concert at the Riverfront, they can rest assured that our Officers are providing patrols in a hands on way. Bicycle patrols accomplish that”.
Bridgeton Police Officer’s Brian McGuigan and Albert Morris will conduct the bicycle patrols during the spring, summer and early fall. Officer McGuigan said of the patrols “ This allows us to move quickly throughout our patrol areas and access places that vehicles could not. This acts as a force multiplier”.
This specific initiative is part of a broad based campaign by Mayor Begley and City Council to create a “greener” community. In conjunction with National Bike month in May, Mayor Begley will be reaching out community wide to create a bicycle association in Bridgeton which can then lead the effort to have such things as bike paths and bike lanes in place.
This is all in keeping with the Mayor’s “Lean toward Green” program which seeks to create environmentally friendly modes of transportation, the use of green technologies, energy efficient community awareness for residences and creation of a cleaner community.
